Karen Wimhurst has worked extensively in opera, music theatre and theatre productions.  One current strand of work has been with long- term collaborator Keith McIntyre, exploring experimental synergies between image and music in performance.  This has resulted in 3 productions ‘New Constellations For Sole, Wind and Drawing Instruments’, commissioned by Sage Gateshead and performed at the Baltic Galleries 2004;  Fragility of Flight , an installation piece for galleries as well as live performance; the chamber opera Darwin and the Barnacle.

As part of Confluence she created the productions Pipeworks for sax quartet and plumbing instruments and Dressing the Stone for soprano, snare drum , chorus and sounds of a working mill, a site specific work performed outside water mills.

Other recent productions include Red Earth Exposures, a site specific work on Hambledon Hill featuring wind players and buto dancer Atsuchi ;  Ring a large scale production involving choir, string quartet soloists, mime artist, Russian trapeze act, synchronised swimmers at Yarmouth Hippodrome; productions with Communicado, Guild of Lillians and Mike Maran including award winning show, Mahler, Song and Dance Man.

Concerned about climate change, she has recently produced two circus-esque shows ‘A Tipping Point ‘ and HOT’.  Designed to reach the widest audience possible these are family/street productions, involving clowning, fire eating, hula hooping and custard pies!

In 2010 she was invited on the VOX course at ROH with her work featured in Exposure at the ROH 2011.  At VOX she has begun work on a new chamber opera, Slick with writer Amanda Boulter.
